Adia Gibbs

"I’m a Portland-based visual artist originally from New York, with a BFA from Parsons School of Design and an MFA from Pacific Northwest College of Art. As an African-American artist, my work is deeply rooted in the excavation and preservation of the past, exploring the connections between memory, ancestry, and myself. Through my practice, I aim to stitch together the fibers of ancestral history that were lost through chattel slavery and the mid-Atlantic system of enslavement, creating a dialogue between the present and the past. I create ancestral artifacts by weaving together textiles, photographs, organic matter, china, and vintage tools of domesticity and carpentry. My work embodies a sacred presence, balancing both spiritual and physical dimensions. I am drawn to the process of decay and transformation, viewing erosion as a means of life. The interplay between organic and manufactured materials in my pieces evokes a sense of connection to the past while highlighting the cyclical nature of existence. My art speaks to the lasting impact of memory and how we engage with history and the natural world."
