About Outer Voice

Outer Voice is an artist-run residency. The group meets twice a month for workshops and discussions. Organized by the individual artists, the workshops include critiques, performances, trips, writing sessions, conversations, readings, experiments, and more. These workshops put each artist at the center of the community. The group also organizes free public time-based art showcase events throughout the season which lasts from September through May. The shows, held at local arts organizations are a chance for the whole alliance, past and present, to show and see one another’s work and celebrate with the broader community. Each season culminates with a collaborative project like a book or a video that includes a contribution by a guest artist or writer. Learn how you can get involved right away!

MISSION

Outer Voice’s mission is to intensify the felt reality of ongoing, supportive solidarity among time-based art and artists in and around Portland, Oregon. Started in 2023, Outer Voice is an artist-run, nine-month residency that meets for bi-weekly creative sessions that meet the art, and artist, in-process. We also organize public events and exhibitions, produce publications, and provide artist stipends. Outer Voice provides artists space, community, support, opportunity, and fosters dialogue. We build relationships that rely on an informed and supportive critical dialogue. Artists can practice, exhibit, celebrate, and develop in community, sharing resources, forming bonds, and linking with a broader network of Portland area artists, organizations, and community members.

Outer Voice supports time-based artists; those who don’t primarily partake in an object-based art production practice. We consider time-based art to include, but not be limited to, video, audio, photography, performance, and writing practices intended as contemporary art with an inquisitive, informed, experimental approach. The art and artists in Outer Voice engage significantly with the process of making their work, and sharing that with other artists and the public. The group also enjoys an ongoing dialog about the nature of time and how it can be perceived through art.
